Orthoses for the targeted stabilization and immobilization of joints

Orthoses provide support, relieve pressure, or immobilize specific joints and body areas without restricting the patient’s overall range of motion. They are used in doctors’ offices, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and outpatient care settings where joints need to be specifically protected following injuries, for chronic conditions, or for preventive purposes. As part of orthopedics, they are distinguished by the fact that, unlike purely elastic supports, they can contain rigid or semi-rigid elements such as aluminum, plastic, or support rods.

Depending on the model, orthoses differ primarily in the body area they target, the materials used, and whether they are custom-molded or prefabricated in fixed sizes. This makes it possible to find the right design for different joints—from the fingers to the ankle to the lower back.

Features and Benefits of Orthoses

Depending on their intended use, orthoses are made of aluminum with foam padding, moldable plastic materials, or breathable fabric with strap and Velcro systems.

Typical features include:

  • Targeted stabilization or immobilization of a joint or body area
  • Can be individually molded depending on the model or adjusted using adjustable strap and Velcro systems
  • Some models are made of breathable material for all-day wear
  • Various sizes, some graded by height or body circumference
  • Some models are latex-free
  • Available as a single orthosis or in a pack of multiple units

Which model is appropriate in each individual case depends primarily on the affected joint, the treatment goal, and whether a custom fit or a ready-made size is sufficient.

Which braces are suitable for which applications?

For splinting individual fingers—for example, following minor injuries—the Actimove AluFoam, a finger splint padded on one side, is suitable. It is supplied as a 50-cm-long strip of aluminum and foam and is cut to the appropriate length individually.

For injuries to the upper ankle, such as ligament strains, or for prophylaxis in at-risk joints, the Dynacast AS ankle brace is recommended; according to the product description, it can be individually molded and is thin enough to fit in most conventional shoes.

For stabilizing the lower back—for example, in cases of lumbar syndrome or postoperatively after a disc surgery—the Actimove Lumbar Sacral Support Comfort orthosis (white) is suitable; its dual-strap system allows for individually adjustable compression.

What should you look for when buying orthoses?

A key criterion is the affected area of the body: Different orthoses are needed for the fingers than for the ankle or lower back, so the selection process should first be based on the affected joint.

The right size is also important: Ready-made orthoses are usually available in several sizes based on height or circumference, while customizable models, such as finger splints, can be individually adjusted to the required length. The size charts provided by the respective manufacturers help with the selection process.

Anyone who needs to wear an orthosis for an extended period of time should also pay attention to the material: Breathable designs are better suited for all-day wear than materials that are less breathable. If you have a known latex allergy, you should also look for latex-free models.

Custom-moldable, prefabricated, or with a strap system—which orthosis is right for you?

Custom-moldable orthoses, such as aluminum finger splints, are shaped and trimmed to the correct form and length only when they are put on, allowing them to be adapted very precisely to each individual patient.

Pre-made joint orthoses have a fixed basic shape and are available in several sizes. Additional Velcro fasteners still allow them to be adjusted to the individual foot or joint circumference.

Orthoses made of a textile base material with a strap system—such as those used for back supports—rely on compression adjustable via straps rather than a rigid shell shape, thereby offering greater flexibility as needs change over the course of treatment.

None of the three designs is inherently better—the key factor is which design principle best suits the specific joint and treatment goal.

Use and Guidelines for Orthoses

Braces should be applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions to achieve the desired stabilization without restricting blood flow. With custom-moldable splints, special attention should be paid to ensuring a clean cut and even padding at the points of contact with the skin.

For models with strap or Velcro closures, the compression can be readjusted as treatment progresses, for example, if swelling subsides or increases. The skin under the orthosis should be checked regularly for pressure points or skin irritation.

If pain, numbness, or signs of restricted blood flow persist, the orthosis should be loosened and medical advice sought, rather than continuing to use it as is.

Complementary Products for Orthoses

In addition to orthoses, the orthopedics section offers other categories for different needs:

  • Support bandages – for elastic support without rigid elements, such as for milder conditions
  • Neck braces – for immobilizing the cervical spine
  • Sports tapes and bandages – for elastic support of joints and muscles during sports

Those who wish to choose between rigid immobilization, elastic support, or sports support depending on their specific symptoms will find additional suitable options in these complementary categories.
