With a length of 500 m, a single roll is sufficient even for large areas; according to the manufacturer, the plastic tape is weather- and tear-resistant and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

For the permanent marking of hazard areas in industrial facilities and warehouses, the 3M™ Hazard Marking Tape 766i, yellow/black, 50 mm x 33 m, is ideal. It is made of PVC and, according to the manufacturer, is particularly abrasion-resistant, which is important in areas with pedestrian or forklift traffic.

The 3M™ Hazard Marking Tape 5702, Yellow/Black, 50 mm x 33 m, is suitable for cordoning off work areas and safety zones, whether temporarily or permanently. It is 0.14 mm thick, made of PVC, and comes individually packaged.

What should you look for when buying barrier tape?

First, you should determine the type of marking needed. If an area needs to be cordoned off at a distance—for example, between posts, traffic cones, or scaffolding components—non-adhesive barrier tape is the right choice. If edges, steps, columns, or floor surfaces need to be marked, hazard warning tape that is applied directly to the surface is more appropriate.

Next, consider the quantity. Large rolls containing several hundred meters are worthwhile for frequent or large-scale cordoning off, such as on construction sites. For individual markings in a warehouse or storage area, 33-meter rolls are sufficient, as they are easier to transport and store.

The location of use also plays a role. For outdoor use, the tape should be weather-resistant according to the manufacturer’s specifications; on floors with vehicle traffic, abrasion resistance is key. Barrier tape, hazard marking tape, or marking tape—what’s the difference?

Traditional barrier tape, often called fluttering tape, is stretched loosely and tied to posts or structural elements. It is suitable for temporary closures that can be set up and taken down quickly.

Hazard marking tapes, on the other hand, are adhered directly to the surface and remain there for an extended period. The yellow-and-black hatched pattern indicates a permanent hazard, such as a step, a bumper, or the edge of a machine. Solid-color marking tapes, on the other hand, are used primarily for organization—for example, for traffic lanes, parking spaces, or storage areas. They do not signal a hazard but rather help organize spaces. In practice, all three types of tape are frequently used side by side.

Application and Guidelines for Barricade Tape

When installing barrier tape, the tape should run taut between sturdy anchor points at a clearly visible height and completely enclose the entire hazard area. Gaps or sagging sections encourage people to bypass the barrier. For longer-term installations, regular inspections are recommended, especially after wind or rain.

Adhesive marking tapes require a clean, dry, and grease-free surface. The tape should be applied without wrinkles and pressed down firmly; edges and ends should not stick up so that no one gets caught on them.
